The belt tensioner is located at the front of the internal combustion engine. The belt-driven outer ring mechanism, including the timing belt, is essential in the package. The tensioner provides tension to the belt, which is driven from the crankshaft to the camshaft, alternator, air compressor, power steering pump and water pump. The tensioner bearing is placed on the slack side.

The tensioner bearing consists of a base, tensioner arm, spring and pulley. It provides pressure to the timing belt that drives the other pulleys, while relieving tension on that belt. The belt needs to run at a constant tension to ensure that it always ensures that the alternator has enough power to move the pulleys that drive all of these individual components.

Tensioner bearings must cope with high temperatures, high speeds of rotation and belt vibration because of the adjacency in the engine that causes the belt to change direction. These bearings are designed with specifications different from standard deep groove bearings. Available in a variety of styles depending on the engine type, Queen Jen manufactures four types of tensioner bearings: utilized, ball bearing, pulley, and bracket assembly types. Timing belts and auxiliary belts are equipped with idler bearings with pulleys and brackets.
In the timing belt mechanism, the type with grooved inner ring or tension adjustment bracket is sometimes called "tensioner bearing" and the type without adjustment mechanism is called "idler bearing".
Auxiliary idler bearings are also used in auxiliary drive belt mechanisms.
