What is a tapered roller bearing?

Tapered roller bearings are split bearings. The inner and outer rings of the bearings have tapered raceways. This type of bearing is divided into single row, double row and four row tapered roller bearings according to the number of mounted rollers. Single row tapered roller bearings can bear radial load and axial load in one direction. When the bearing bears radial load, it will produce an axial force, so when another bearing can bear the axial force in the opposite direction, it needs to be balanced.

Tapered roller bearings are radial thrust rolling bearings with rolling body of tapered rollers. There are small taper angle and large taper angle two kinds. Small taper angle mainly bear radial load mainly radial and axial combined load. Often used in pairs, reverse installation. Inner ring and outer ring can be installed separately. Installation and use of radial and axial clearance can be adjusted; large taper angle mainly withstand combined axial and radial load, mainly axial load. Generally not used alone to support pure axial load. Pairs of configuration (the same name opposite installation), can withstand pure radial load.

Single tapered roller bearings to withstand the axial load capacity depends on the contact angle, that is, the outer ring raceway angle. The larger the angle, the greater the axial load carrying capacity. The most used tapered roller bearings are single row tapered roller bearings. In the front hubs of automobiles, small double-row tapered roller bearings are used. Four-row tapered roller bearings are used in large cold and hot rolling mills and other heavy machinery.

The outer ring (or inner ring) of a double row tapered roller bearing is a single unit. The two small inner end faces of the inner ring (or outer ring) are close to each other with a spacer in between. The clearance is adjusted by the thickness of the spacer. The thickness of the spacer can also be used to adjust the pre-overrun of the double row tapered roller bearing.

Four-row tapered roller bearings, the bearing performance and double-row tapered roller bearings are basically the same, but the radial load is greater than double-row tapered roller bearings, the limit speed is slightly lower, mainly used in heavy machinery.

Consistency of roller profile and dimensions 
 The manufactured dimensions and geometric tolerances of the rollers contained in tapered roller bearings are so close that they are virtually identical. This provides optimum load distribution, reduces noise and vibration, and allows preload to be set more accurately.
Rigid bearing applications
Single row tapered roller bearings are usually adjusted for a second tapered roller bearing. Rigid bearing applications can be achieved by applying a preload.
Break-in period with reduced temperature peaks
Tapered roller bearings typically have a break-in period during which tapered roller bearings of conventional design experience a significant amount of friction, which leads to wear. This effect is considered a temperature spike. With the help of tapered roller bearing designs, friction, frictional heat and wear are significantly reduced as long as the bearings are mounted and lubricated correctly.
Separable and interchangeable
The inner ring with the roller and cage assembly (inner ring) can be mounted separately from the outer ring (outer ring). In addition, the separable components are interchangeable. This facilitates installation, disassembly, and maintenance inspection procedures.
